For many people, passports renewals by mail is the most convenient. You won’t have to make a personal appearance so traveling a great distance won’t be necessary. To do so by mail, however, requires that certain conditions be met.

Conditions

There are a few conditions to be met if you want to mail your request. You must be able to submit your current passport with your application and it must be undamaged. It is also required that you obtained it within the past fifteen years, and you were at least sixteen years old at the time. If you have had a name change, submit the proof with your application.

Form DS-82

If all qualifications mentioned above are met and you are able to use the accompanying form by mail, you will receive the new passport using this convenient method. Even if you have never had a passport before, you can still get one without a personal appearance in some situations.

Expedited Service

If you need an expedited document, it is possible to get one within two to three weeks. This may be necessary when you plan to travel soon or when you need to get a foreign visa within four weeks. The cost will be higher and you will need to be sure and mark “expedite” on the outside of the envelope. You will also need to add the cost of overnight shipping both ways to the overall cost.

Appearance Required

If, when you plan your trip, you see you will be leaving in less than fourteen days or if you need a foreign visa within four weeks, you will have to apply in person and will also have to pay a much higher fee. You must have all documents needed at the time of application to get it within this time frame. You will have to go to a local passport office to do this.

Name Change

When you have an official name change, you must officially change it on the document. Get a copy of the court order or marriage certificate, depending on why your name changed. Send these, along with the original copy of your passport. You will need either the original of these documents or a certified copy. Send with the appropriate form and a color picture. You will not be charged for this service. The same thing goes for a kids U.S. passport fast.

Errors

Errors that appear can be corrected whenever needed, using the appropriate forms. They do not have any charges associated with them. Things like typographical errors and errors with the date of birth are some examples. You simply need to include the proper form to get them corrected.

Mailing

There are a number of circumstances in which you may need to make corrections or additions. Because all documents must be in an undamaged condition, it is advised to send them in an envelope large enough to prevent folding and to use a strong envelope for greater protection.
